Millions of people worldwide have been affected by tooth loss due to periodontal disease and tooth decay. A greater percentage of the population that is affected by this is young children who are suffering from toothaches and gum infection due to bad oral hygiene. As early as 2 years of age, kids can lose a tooth due to bad oral health or an accident that knocked off a tooth. Although it is not the initial recommendation of dentists because kids can still get their permanent teeth around the age of 7, some kids are still given false teeth due to some valid reasons. But giving dentures to children is case to case basis and would also depend on the cooperation of the young wearer himself.
There are several pointers in taking care of dentures just like how natural teeth should be taken care of. If the young false teeth wearer is not able to properly maintain the denture, it will just cause more problems to his oral health. A problem that is usually encountered by denture wearers even with adults is that the wearer can expect too much with their dentures. Most patients would immediately think that all their problems will be resolved after wearing their new dentures. The issue is that some dentures may not immediately be comfortable and functional as expected. Often times, dentures should be checked for any adjustments to make it comfortable to wear.
There are ill-fitting dentures that can cause more problems such as gum injuries and teeth misalignment. Thus, the wearer should be able to properly inform the dentist about how the denture fits onto their gums. Because of this, some kids may not be able to express how they feel about their new set of dentures as they may be afraid of sharing this to their dentist or they may think that it is how wearing dentures would really feel like. Parents should be able to understand their kid's needs and check their kid's oral health every now and then after wearing dentures.
Within a couple of weeks of wearing the denture, the kid should be able to adjust on wearing it. But if he is still having trouble with the fit, immediately check with your dentist about making adjustments. As a parent, you should also remind your kid about taking a rest from wearing the false teeth during nighttime. Teach him about proper care and maintenance of his natural teeth and the false teeth so that by the time that his permanent teeth will erupt, your kid will already know the importance of having good oral hygiene.
