Because of their compact size, modern furniture pieces are lighter than classic ones. Most modern furniture pieces are made from light materials such as laminated wood and wrought iron. These are the popular materials used for today's office, kitchen, and bedroom furniture needs. Other materials for modern day furniture are strengthened plastic, fiber glass, and iron bases. If you have noticed, most airports make use of plastic lounge seats in their waiting areas. Classic furniture is big, heavy and is made from solid wood. The wood used in classic furniture is dark. The cushions, seats and mattresses in past used to be stuffed with horsehair or cotton. Silk and cotton were the fabrics that were used in classic furniture.
Assembly, disassembly, and maintenance of modern furniture are easier than that of classical ones. There are cleaners, polishers and even stain removers that are available in various furniture stores nowadays to keep modern furniture from looking worn and torn. However, classic furniture is much sturdy and longer lasting since they are made from more durable materials such as solid wood. It takes a long time before they look old. Modern furniture is more ergonomically designed. The chairs are not straight backed, and the cushions are more comfortable. The biggest difference is that modern furniture is not formal and stiff.
