Consistency presents the most problems it seems. For a CPAP respirator to be of help, a sleep apnea patient has to sleep with it every night without fail. It is easy to perceive how this would be difficult during overnight stays or business trips.
The constrictive masks used to keep the airways open are an issue as well. They can irritate the skin around the mouth and cause pimples. Then there is the situation with the long hose. It can limit your natural sleep-related movements, and may make getting up to use the bathroom or get a drink an even bigger hassle.
There are also problems, including congestion and dryness, to deal with. The air coming from the machine is very dry unless it has a humidifier. Dryness, if left unmedicated, can lead to breathing difficulties, nosebleeds, and painful sores.
Many folks report disruption in their regular sleeping positions and movements. As a CPAP device is only beneficial when its user is on their back, those used to sleeping on their sides or front side may experience discomfort. If you can't sleep on your back, the CPAP respirator may potentially worsen your sleep quality and render the machine harmful.
One of the most blaring shortcomings of using a CPAP is its price tag. But it's not just the cost of the machines, it's the cost of the examinations as well. They cost hundreds, even thousands of dollars. It's not hard to find used ones for sale online, but these have been known to contain foul odors, require calibration, and still cost a lot of money.
Above all, there are safety worries surrounding these devices. Resulting from the air introduced into the lungs, alveoli can become irritated, increasing infection risks.
Taking all of that into consideration, using a CPAP is still one of the most preffered ways to handle sleep apnea. There are a lot of sleep apnea sufferers who find the CPAP is a better option than prescription medication, and given the machine's recent technological and design modifications, it shouldn't be a great deal of time before it is even more convenient.
